During an first day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani committed to “reimagine” New York City, ushering in “a fresh chapter” and an audacious start to his term.

A Groundbreaking Leader

The 34-year-old democratic socialist, who was a relatively obscure state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first Muslim mayor. He also made history by being the inaugural to be take the oath of office using the Qur'an.

Mamdani now undertakes one of the most demanding jobs in American politics, with a plan featuring:

• Subsidized daycare
• Free buses
• A cap on rents for approximately 1 million households
• A trial program of city-run grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion expense of these services may be challenging to finance. Mamdani has pledged to raise taxes on the wealthiest New Yorkers and corporations. However, as a city subject to the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Managing External Dynamics

The new mayor will deal with apprehension from some Jewish New Yorkers concerned about his past criticisms regarding Israel. Tensions were highlighted during the transition when a appointments director stepped down over offensive past tweets.

Mamdani has moved to ease these concerns by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, avoiding the appearance of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “socialist” and threatened withholding government money. Despite this, a prior meeting between the two was reportedly unexpectedly productive.

As his term begins, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Queens apartment to the historic mayoral residence. The previous occupant offered a unusual piece of advice about a supposed friendly ghost in the home, which allegedly only haunts those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his remarks with a direct declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
