"Any idea when you're chatting with Haim?" a message arrives. "My request was to ask if I can join as their fourth member."

However, there remains a single issue: I also wants to be Haim's additional sibling. What's more, we are in plentiful company. Several celebrated fans have also petitioned for the honor.

The evidence suggests an irresistible appeal is going on. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana started their path doing sets at local delicatessens with their family. Presently, they stand as multiple Grammy Award nominees.

Like all the most iconic bands, they're a close gang. Their music videos frequently depict them marching in sync down the roads of Los Angeles. On stage, they perform with such boundless happiness you inevitably think, "I want to be involved in that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that audience members approached us and said, 'Seeing you perform, I got a drum kit'," says Alana, the most junior of the Haim siblings. "That is the ultimate honor. That's an award in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can motivate young girls to start a band."

"And thus all gets an invitation to be the honorary member of Haim."

Grammy Recognition

The group are speaking from their homes, where they're recovering after an major tour in promoting their fourth album, I Quit.

They're presently celebrating the news it's been nominated for best rock album at the Grammys – with Haim the pioneering female band ever in contention for the trophy.

"I follow the announcements every year, so it almost feels like The Truman Show when your name is announced," says Alana. "I immediately called my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this right or am I dreaming'?"

The weight of the accolade isn't lost on the band.

"We truly set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a significant milestone," says Alana. "However we're just appreciative for the pioneers that inspired us."

Emotional Upheaval and Laughter

The project came out of a time of emotional upheaval. All three sisters ended up single, and the music captures that strange transitional period where you're relieved to be free, but not yet ready to start anew.

The lyrics follow breakups and goodbyes. The sisters desire love, but not the specific love they've had. You can hear them working out in real life who they aspire to be.

"I adore description, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a slogan. You have to actively work on shutting out the noise and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Development of Style

That newfound confidence demanded a fresh approach – more organic and powerful than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that started with the drum sound.

"Percussion is such a specific thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she emphasizes.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our biography," jokes Alana. "Our motto is, our albums don't start until we find the right drum sound."

Stories and Shared Laughter

The band's candor shaped the album's promotional campaign, where the sisters revealed some of their dating tales.

One man ended things with Este over a medical concern. Alana told a story of flying to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.

"Experiencing these setbacks, you just feel like there's no light," explains Alana. "Therefore to be able to find humor in those stories and have them tell you wilder stories, it's so amazing."

A Confident Path

One can easily sense a shift in the band. Today, Haim are more confident of their standing in the music world.

They're major draws, with hit albums and an global following.

However the sister act will forever be their number one commitment.

"Me and my siblings have been making music since I was a young child," concludes Alana. "There is no alternative that we were destined for. And I'm really fortunate we've made it and we're still kicking."
